Eating healthy is not always easy, especially during the summer when you often enjoy traveling for vacations. During vacation time, it it easy to slip back into unhealthy eating habits. However, there are many ways that you can still stay on track, even when eating out at a restaurant. Check out these 11 easy tips for a healthy eating experience, no matter where you are.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for what you need! You are not being impolite; you are simply taking care of your health.
- Have an opinion! Choose the restaurant, if possible, when dining with others. Research your options and look at menus before you go out. If possible, eat at restaurants that focus on fresh, locally sourced, organic and seasonal foods.
- Politely decline the bread basket and the drink menu.
- Ask for water. Drink 1-2 glasses before your meal to reduce your appetite and limit yourself to one alcoholic drink, preferably wine.
- Ask for simple food preparation. Order grilled protein with steamed vegetables drizzled with olive oil and lemon.
- Always ask for olive oil and lemon in lieu of dressing which is usually made with unhealthy oils.
- Skip the starches and ask for double veggies instead.
- Avoid sauces, dressings, and dips. They are usually high calorie and laden with added sugar, unhealthy oils, gluten, and dairy.
- Share an entrée. Portion sizes at restaurants are notoriously large.
- Always combine a carbohydrate with some fiber, protein, or healthy fats. Never eat carbs alone!
- Ask for berries or sorbet for dessert.
